Seven Cyclery-Opus riders toed the line for the local showdown on Preston Street this past Sunday. With a high calibre line-up including local hero and World Champion Karol-Ann Canuel, Olympian Joelle Numainville, Joanie Caron, among others, as well as top domestic teams Trek Red Truck Racing all the way from Vancouver, SAS-Mazda from Montreal, and Rise Racing from Ontario, it made for a strong and exciting race. It is always a privilege to race in our team hometown, sporting our team colours in front of a crowd full of friends, family, sponsors and supporters. These are the people who truly make the racing possible – thank you!!!!

The call for rain throughout the day gave flashbacks to the torrential downpours of Preston Street 2013, however, by the time the women lined up at mid-day, the sky had cleared and the ground was dry. Perfect race conditions! The Opus team was a key animator from start to finish, launching attacks and whittling down the field. Few moves got significant ground on the charging pack, however, and the race ultimately came down to a group sprint led by Joelle, with Jamie Gilgen and Rebecca Beaumont hot on her heels.

Though the overall result was not what we were aiming for as a team, many lessons were learned and everyone’s legs got some extra speed work. It was a perfect final preparation for our next set of races. Most of the team is off to Saint-Georges for Elite National Championships at the end of the week and then BC Superweek in early July. Katherine (#theMaineEvent) will be heading to Quebec a week later for Junior Nationals before some final prep for World Track Championships in August. Stay tuned for the next set of adventures!
