In the Mountains of Quebec

By: Ariane Bonhomme

This weekend, a part of the team was racing in Ste-Agathe, QC. The weekend started with a 60 kilometers road race on Saturday. The race was an out and back on this very hilly road. The team tried to stay on the front and cover attacks to try to be part of them, but when Lex Albrecht from Optum p/b by Kelly Benefit Stategy attacked with Alizée Brien from team Tibco-SVB, it was too much for all the peloton and they rode away for the rest of the race. The race kept going in the peloton, some girls tried to attack but nothing sticked. It was down to a bunch sprint where I made a lead out to rock star junior Katherine Maine to win the elite bunch sprint (3rd in the elite category) as well as winning the junior race.

Sunday was a criterium downtown Ste-Agathe-des-Monts. The name of the city tells it right, it is a very hilly part of Québec and so there was two very punchy hills in the criterium course . We knew the selection would be done early in the race so our goal was to have all the team in that front selection. After about ten minutes, Katherine, Emily and I found ourselves in the breakaway with three other very strong riders. There was some attacks mainly from Lex Albrecht but we were determined not to let her go away. With ten minutes to go, I went to see Katherine at the back of the group to start planning the finish, this is when she got a flat. With three laps remaining in the race, she was not able to get a free lap. That didn’t stop her to come back with the breakaway with one lap to go. We tried to set Emily for the sprint, but with all the chaos from the flat and the girls trying to take flyers, we were not able to make it on the podium. It was so great to see all the team in the breakaway with some very badass pro riders. We worked really hard hard not to let them go away. The team did an amazing job over the weekend! Now we are getting ready to rock in our hometown in a week and a half at the GP Gatineau. See you there !!
