Race report: Tour de Delta stages 2-4

The Stevens Racing p/b The Cyclery women are in British Colombia for BC Superweek — a series of prestigious races in the Vancouver area. The girls put out a solid performance on Stage 1 of the first event, the Tour de Delta, on Friday; Chris Reid reports on the final three stages.

Tour de Delta Stage 2: Brenco Criterium
Ladner, B.C. — July 6, 2013

The Brenco Criterium is held on a tight, technical, 900-m circuit. With the 50-rider field, bike handling was at a premium and Audrey Bernard shone all night, constantly riding in the top 10 through the course’s fast corners. Catherine Dessureault played her hand far better on the night, patiently waiting for the second half of the race before making dangerous moves. Carrie Cartmill came through with a big turn on the front that perfectly set up Cath to bridge to a lead group containing former U.S. champ Robin Farina and Canadian Olympian Denise Ramsden. Cath put in a great performance to finish fourth on the night, with Audrey coming across the line in 15th. Guest rider Emily Flynn won the most improved award for night putting together a ride that was night and day compared to stage one. Candice Vermeulen went down on a crash on the final corner on a prime lap but escaped with just scrapes and bruises. Click here for full results.

Tour de Delta Stage 3: White Spot Delta Road Race
Delta B.C. — Sunday, July 7

A brand-new road course saw far less climbing and far more turning than the old circuit. It was obviously a course the sprinters would salivate for — especially Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies with Leah Kirchmann in attendance.

All  the girls rode well, sitting near the front of the field and trying to cover moves. Emily lost contact when the pace hotted up on the climb on Lap 3 but was able to claw her way back to the field where she remained for the next four laps. Cath seized the day on the penultimate lap to come through the start finish with nearly a minute lead. Optum had to put their team on the front and were only able to catch her with just 3 km left in the 80-km race. Bernard received some good help from Carrie and Candice and put together one of her best results to date in ninth. Click here for full results.

Cath finished 9th on the GC and Audrey 16th. Click here for the full overall standings.

On Monday the team enjoyed a well deserved rest day before tackling the UBC Criterium Tuesday!
