The Stevens Racing p/b The Cyclery women are in British Colombia for BC Superweek, one of the most prestigious blocks of racing on the Canadian calendar. The racing got underway Friday with the MK Delta Criterium. Chris Reid reports on the opening day of racing:
Tour de Delta Stage 1 – MK Delta Criterium
Delta, BC – Friday, July 5, 2013
Day one done and dusted, by and large all the girls rode well on a grinding 1.2-km rectangular circuit with a long uphill drag. Race blew itself out pretty hard so that by the end when the group with Lex Albrecht and Denise Ramsden escaped there just wasn’t the collective will to bring it back.
Catherine Dessurealt was pretty omnipresent on the front, Carrie Cartmill had a super well-timed attack late in the race and guest rider Candice Vermeulen made a worthy effort to dice it up in the field sprint but got chopped in the last corner and lost her momentum pretty badly and slid back to just inside the top twenty alongside Carrie.
All in all, a pretty good start to the week to clear the air travel out of their legs as they get a feel for the level of the racing. A much tougher field then we anticipated at almost double the size of last year and significantly deeper. But I believe the girls will get much more out of it this way in the long run.
